CHAPTER 10

EMBER

Rylen gave me his word, but I don’t feel at ease in the slightest.

Maybe it’s because I want his touch, so I’m not just fighting his wants but my own as well.

“Is there a reason you do not wish for me to kiss your sensitive flesh or cradle your breasts in my palms?” he asks, his brow furrowed. “You clearly enjoy it, and I do as well.” He swallows, deep and the collar around his neck shifts. “Ember, did Aleksi…”

Rylen’s hesitation, unusual for someone so confident, has me lifting my eyes to his and tilting my head. “Did he what?”

“I worry if I give voice to it, that I’ll regret not having killed him when I had the chance.”

“Hey.” I cover his hand with mine and hold it tightly at the tormented expression on his face. “I’m fine. Whatever you’re thinking, the worst of it happened today, and the only reason it didn’t end differently is because you saved me. I’m grateful, Rylen.”

He blows out a harsh breath. “I’d feared that out of spite for me, he’d damaged more than your body— your very soul—by taking you against your will.”

“Oh.” I shake my head. “No, he never tried any of that. Aleksi was always too busy yelling at me.”

“Before we first spoke, I wasn’t sure if you’d given him your attentions or lain with him. But after you gifted me with this…” He uses his free hand to caress the necklace holding my lock of hair. “I knew I was right in believing fate made you for me and me alone.”

A smile spreads on my lips, and my heart squeezes in on itself, making me breathless. I say nothing, too overwhelmed by his confession. When is Rylen not turning me into an emotional mess?

“Be that as it may,” he says, “Aleksi won’t hurt you, assuming he recovers from his injuries.”

I lift a brow. “That bad?”

“He almost killed you. Broken limbs and blood loss are nothing in comparison. He’s fortunate I didn’t do more damage.”

“I’m glad you did.”

Rylen smirks at me. “Bloodthirsty female.”

I grin, and he stares at me with fierce eyes, his pupils an obsidian that doesn’t seem to reflect but absorbs the moonlight and fire around him. He’s achingly beautiful. I wonder if he knows just how much.

"Don't you think you should get some rest?" I say to Rylen. "You have a big day tomorrow."

I cringe. I made it sound like he's going to his first day of kindergarten instead of fighting in the arena where he could possibly die. They are not comparable in the least. I clear my throat to try again. “What I meant was that it's probably a good idea for you to get some sleep."

"Very well, but not for me, for you.”

“Same result,” I say with a shrug.

He rises from the mattress with the grace of a predator, and I admire him as he walks over to the side table. His muscles undulate under his golden skin, and his wings flutter gently with every step.
